The North Branch Cascades is a remarkable 1 mile stretch along the North Branch of the Winooski River beside Route 12. It is just south of Lake Elmore and is 14 miles north on Route 12 from Montpelier. It is characterized by seven stunning cascading waterfalls and numerous deep holes. Directions: From the North, take Route 12 direction south past Lake Elmore and 8 miles south of Elmore Store is the pull off for the main parking area on your left. There are two other parking areas to the South as well, if this one is full.

Head south down Route 12 towards Montpelier. About 7 miles down, you will see a sign with a hiker icon on the right and just past it on the left is the parking lot for the North Branch Cascades Trail. The trail is one mile long and runs along the north branch of the Winooski River. There are several waterfalls and swimming holes along the trail, with handmade stone paths leading down to them. They have also installed benches along the way. The Vermont River Conservancy developed this trail two years ago, and it is a treasure.

Wind along the river on this short, flat hike. Swimming holes to enjoy and lots of beautiful water cascades. Hike is about 2 miles total - 1 miles out and 1 back.

This is a very accessible, yet charming 1.4-mile trail alongside the river and many little waterfalls. A sweet respite with several swimming spots. We also snowshoe here in the winter.
