Visit Quail Island. A remote place but very peaceful and scenic.

Quail Island has a varied and interesting history as a Quarantine Island for early immigrants. Husky dogs going to Antarctica were trained there. Twenty years ago regeneration of the native bush started with over 100,000 planted to date.

Great walking track for all levels of fitness. Ok for prams and strollers too. Great views. Historic. Great photo opportunities. A picnic area with flush toilets and toilet paper, running water. Swimming area by picnic area. If you like picking up rocks like I do, then you’ll love picking up rocks from this rocky beach area!!! Lots of quails running around on quail island.

You can catch the Ferry from Lyttleton to here. Excellent for a pinic and half day of walking/soaking in the views.

Take a ferry ride on Black Cat cruises to the island which was once a leper colony and where Captain Scott quarantined and trained his animals for his Antarctic expeditions.
