Waipoua Forest A 25-minute drive takes you into the ancient and humbling world that is the Waipoua Forest. This superb forest sanctuary abounds with rare native New Zealand flora and fauna, mighty kauri tree, kiwi, feather-like ferns and subtropical rainforest. The forest hosts the largest kauri tree in the world, Tane Mahuta, which is named after the mythical Maori god of the forest. The tree stands close to the road, is around 51.2 metres high and estimated to be between 1500 and 2500 years old. There are many walks through the forest to the various stands of trees.
