Iconic pub - unchanged since the 1940's. Like stepping back in time. Run by the legendary Bessie though Nerys her grandaughter is more to be seen these days.

Is it a pub, or is it just Bessie's front room? If you want quirky then this is the place for you...the options for a drink on offer are few but if you love a great experience then head over to this place!!

Bessie is world renowned as an amazing character that has run her pub in the Gwaun all of her life. Bessie and her pub is a very rare cultural experience for only those who understand the authenticity of someone being utterly themselves and who do not give a * what anyone else thinks. She runs the valley and is respected highly. Do only use the back door to her house. Do not dare sit in HER armchair by the fire. Be honoured if she teases you or asks pertinent questions. Beer is excellent. No other good options. She sometimes closes the doors after "closing time" and continues on if the locals are playing music or if it is the local New Year celebrations on the Julian calendar. (Hen Gallen)

The Dyffryn Arms, commonly known as Bessie's in the Gwaun Valley (Cwm Gwaun) is famous for its pints of Bass poured from a serving hatch to customers in Bessie's front room. ... Most importantly the pints of Bass poured from a jug are flowing and the serving hatch from the bar to the front room remain intact.

AKA "Bessie's" - a pub from another century. Has to be seen to be believed. Do not expect: fruit machines, live jazz, bowls of olives, craft beer, equity schemes, ice, lemons. Do expect: a pint of bass poured into a jug from a barrel, then poured into your glass, served through a hatch in the wall of a small square room with a fireplace and a picture of The Queen on the wall. Clientele variable but generally friendly.
