Home of Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, Oromocto is located on the west bank of the Saint John River. Originally, in the 18th century, an Acadian village, it was burnt to the ground in the Great Expulsion and rebuilt as Fort Hughes in the American Revolution. After, the area saw an influx of settlers from the United Empire loyalists who also settled the surrounding area. In the 19th century it became a shipbuilding town but that went into decline at the beginning of the 20th century. This is when the military picked it as their main training base in Canada and remodeled the town to what you see today.
